Dirt Club
I’ve fallen down another rabbit hole and most amusingly it led me to dirt (seems everything goes back to dirt) I thought science knew everything (or if not close enough) how could the food we eat and its production cause such controversy? it all seemed so entrenched in history only now as I dive deeper the peculiarities of food production in america get more peculiar streamlined and simplified subsidized homogenized monopolized removed from their environments every part of the equation picked apart smaller and smaller bits "progress" processed beyond recognition turning us the consumer(?) or final product(?) into "walking corn chips" of our own design (I did think we were more akin to potatoes but if we are what we eat we are now undeniably a mind-bending mix of corn byproducts and petroleum appetizing) and my stomach turns with the reality that the math works for those in charge short term profit over long term sustainability will always win if capitalism decides but it doesn't have to win in my heart so I had to find an action step regardless of how small I feel and how insurmountable the problem so I'll play small lean in learn from the soil planning my garden to be reckless and untidy diverse and cooperative get to know the pests the weeds and the fungi (and what else? I can't wait to see what else?!?) that make it all go round and I'll sing songs as I play and explore about sustainability and reciprocal loops coevolutionary relationships and playing in the garden digging my hands into the soil watching it come back to life and hopefully bring a little balance as the steward to this little plot of land I think it might be time to start a little dirt club for all of us
The poem above is inspired by a recent bunch of posts by Jim Dalling and his Remarkable Foolsletter as well as the books The Botany of Desire and The Omnivore’s Dilemma both by Michael Pollan. I am seriously considering starting an ecologically friendly art and gardening club called Dirt Club. The name reminds me of playing in the mud as a kid, and curiosity and poetry and eating cherry tomatoes out of the garden as a young child, and the joy and exploration involved in getting dirty in the garden or digging into a messy art project, or especially messy journeys of finding ourselves tied so intricately into our ecosystems, and finding a way to support each other while we play. Anyone out there interested in playing along?

Upcoming Shows
I was lucky enough to have pieces juried into two upcoming shows this April!
First, opening Friday, April 12th at the AOY Art Center from 6-8PM, the 12th Annual Juried Show. Come on out!! I dropped off my piece Luminous Lemons yesterday, and I LOVE the way it’s reclaimed gold frame ended up working with the colors of the chlorophyll print!
Second, opening Saturday, April 13th from 6-9PM, The Eclipse Center for Creative Community is presenting Elysian: An Exhibit of Art and Poetry where three of my chlorophyll print collages and one POEM was accepted.
I agreed to read the poem at the opening (eeek)! They’ll also have 10 copies of my new chlorophyll printing book for sale, which includes the poem below!!! But that’s not the one that made it into the show. LOL! Guess you’ll have to make it out to find out what did! 💚
Thanks for holding this space with me!!!
