Dandelion Leaves and Tiny Sacred
With the weather finally warming and sunny little dandelion heads popping out everywhere, I’ve been experimenting with them the past week or so, and decided to throw one into my print frame with some hand written text. I’m all at once surprised and not surprised that the lowly dandelion leaf printed! It seems a bit more of a burn than a bleach, but it’s undeniable! This actually makes sense knowing how well the other magnesium rich “salad greens” printed for me last summer.
A Story from 1997 and An Opportunity for 2024
When I applied to NYU, when it came time for me to write my application essay I knew I had a problem. It had a word limit. I can’t work within word limits. But the essay I wanted to write was based on a poem. Ta da! I had my answer. Free form poetry would let me say what I wanted to say and still keep me within my word limit. Lucky for me, whoever read my “essay” didn’t mind me bending the rules.
Recently, I found out about an upcoming solo show Colleen Attara will be having late this summer at ArtWRKD in Newtown. I can’t wait to see what treasures Colleen will be showing, but on top of that, in a stroke of genius, she is also putting on a group show of “tiny sacred” journals made by her students like me! Here’s a little flip-through of some of the pages of what I’ve been affectionately calling “little scrappy Wonder Woman.”
I ran into Colleen outside her studio last week and she told me that she was going to ask each of us in the show to write about what of us, or what of ours is held within the tiny journal we would be including in the show, and I swooned. What an opportunity for poetry! Then I read the email she sent shortly after about it, where she mentioned that she was asking for two sentences from each of us. Lol! Call me Mr Ed, but if I’ve got something worth talking about and open my mouth at all, I’m probably going to talk too much. So what to do? I was instantly reminded of my college essay. So for now, I wrote a poem. If need be, I can always pull a couple sentences out of it once it’s all marinated a bit longer. But here’s my long-form answer.
Tiny Sacred 04/25/2024 Textures and torn bits so many moments that add up to a life artifacts of the joys and lessons beliefs and betrayals especially the hardest ones where I betrayed myself and slow but profound appreciation it holds my past my future my failures and wisdom experiments saved over a quarter century now and some from last week commingling a collaboration with past and future me playing together not overthinking it tearing at the pieces of the past giving them new life building a new path before me opening up to new dreams supported by the curiosities I collected along the way
I love the slower, more mindful approach tiny sacred journalling helps me foster in my life, and how it’s been bleeding into my other artistic avenues. If you’re interested in playing along, check out Colleen’s teachable classes. Use the code IAMSACRED for 20% off either tiny sacred class and dive in! The deadline for the show isn’t until June 16th, and you’d be surprised just how quickly these tiny meditations can come together if you just let your mind wander and hands play!
Thanks for being here 💚
